Guadalajara Pub Crawl: Traditional Cantinas

Spend the night experiencing the oldest and most traditional pubs in Mexico

3 hrs

2 ~ 12

Medium content

Spend the night experiencing different cantinas, Mexican pubs that have a unique mix between the old and modern, places full of Mexican culture and history. As a result of industrialization and the emergence of the working and middle class, cantinas emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz. These places were usually located in neo-colonial buildings in the areas of transit and commerce of the time, what we now know as this area as the historical center. On this tour, you will walk through the historical center in Guadalajara, visiting the cantinas which are frequented by the Tapatíos (the Spanish word for Guadalajaran locals). You will try snacks and drinks typical of the region, like torta ahogada, tostadas, tequila, micheladas, beer and Mexican cocktails like margaritas, charro negro, vampiro and paloma. In cantinas there is no discrimination; they are well known for their friendly  and lively atmosphere. You can chat with friends, colleagues or the love of your life, but also sing and dance the night away. It is common to find a pianist playing or regional music bands as the “norteño” or “mariachi;” of course, there is usually at least one person in the group who sings a cappella after a few good tequilas. During the tour, Local Guide Fernando will provide information, anecdotes, legends and myths of each establishment as well as its link with the local traditions. This fun, social tour is the most authentic way to experience the Mexican nightlife of Guadalajara.

I was born in Ensenada, Baja California, a small fishing town in northern Mexico near the US border. Due to the cultural diversity in my hometown, I became passionate about the beach, seafood and foreign and local sports such as soccer, football, baseball, basketball and volleyball. I am an assiduous reader of Mexican literature and history and a passionate taster of tequila, mezcal, pulque and other agave spirits. In 2008, I moved to Guadalajara, the place where our national spirit par excellence is produced. While studying at the University of Guadalajara, I started to work in the tequila industry as a bilingual tour guide. Since, I have had the opportunity to share the tequila culture with people from all over the world as we tour the distilleries in the valley of Tequila & Amatitan. As a tour guide and a sociologist, I value cultural exchange. I love transmitting the knowledge and history of my country to those who show interest. It is extremely interesting and valuable to see how many people come to Mexico to learn about our traditions, customs, landscapes, art, food and drinks. As a Mexican, I will always be proud to share the beautiful and incredible things Mexico has to offer!
